Active Play with a Toddler Tricycle: 7 Practical Tips

A safe place, a regular time and an adult close by. Seven practical tips to make tricycle rides part of your toddler’s week.

Active play with a toddler tricycle does not need a plan. It needs a safe place, a regular time and an adult close by. These seven tips are the ones that make the difference between a tricycle that gets used every week and one that sits by the door.

Why active play with a toddler tricycle is worth the effort

The CDC recommends that preschool-aged children be physically active throughout the day, and it names tricycle riding as one kind of active play adults can encourage. A tricycle also solves a practical problem: it gives a toddler a reason to go outside and a way to keep up on a walk.

1. Pick a safe place to ride

The American Academy of Pediatrics advises letting children ride only in protected places away from cars, driveways and swimming pools. A park path, a quiet sidewalk or an empty playground works well. Check the ground for slopes and curbs before you start.

2. Make the helmet part of the routine

Put the helmet on before your child gets on the tricycle, every time. If it is simply what happens before a ride, there is less to argue about later. Add closed-toe shoes, which protect toes from the wheels and the ground.

3. Ride at the same time each day

Toddlers do well with routine. A ride after breakfast or before dinner becomes something they ask for. Ten or fifteen minutes is enough to start with.

4. Let the tricycle match their stage

A younger toddler will mostly sit and enjoy the ride while you push and steer with the parent handle. That still counts as time outdoors together. When your child starts to push the pedals, let them try on flat ground, and keep the handle until they can steer too.

5. Give the ride a destination

A ride to the mailbox, the playground or the duck pond is more interesting than a loop around the block. Let your child choose between two places. A basket for a snack or a favorite toy helps as well.

6. Go out in more than one kind of weather

A cool or cloudy day is fine with the right clothes. A canopy helps in the sun, and a rain cover keeps a light shower from ending the walk. Skip the ride in storms, on ice or in extreme heat.

7. Join in

Children copy what they see. Walk or jog next to the tricycle, set up a short course with chalk, or invite a friend with their own ride. Notice the small steps, like the first full turn of the pedals, and say so.
